AirOFit review
We train our body, to be the best we can be in sport. But if it is reasonable to train our lungs as well? Taking to the consideration fact, that during each activities, our breath is crucial?. What if the breath could be deeper, our lungs would be with higher capacity and we could breath in/out much faster? I wonder if those factors could increase our velocity, performance or simply our self confidence? Could AirOFit help us with it? I’ve decided to verify it, and below you will find my AirOFit review.
AirOFit? why I decided to try it?
I’m a runner since 2013. In 2018 I’ve run marathon in 2:55. During my trainings (especially high intervals) I’ve felt that I couldn’t take enough air to my lungs. However, my legs could work faster, but I couldn’t provide enough oxygen to my muscles. Hyperventilation was not working correctly. From that moment I thought that there is a space for improvement.
When I’ve started to train triathlon, I’ve felt it even much more, especially in water. Swimming was my weakness and troubles with breath was the main reason of that. From time to time I didn’t managed to catch breath therefor I’ve stressed out. It was crucial during my SilesiaMan competition in 2020, when I almost DNF because of that feeling (more about it, you’ll find HERE). For example, when I trained in a pool, there were moments, when I couldn’t breath out under water, which provides to another problem – not taking enough of air when my head was above the water… not enough time and air makes me feel really weak, stressed, feeling that you are drowning isn’t my favorite of course:). I’ve found a three difficulties which results in that situation:
- time of breath (breath in and out),
- lungs capacity
- feeling ok with discomfort related to lack of oxygen
Together with those previous problems during my runs, I’ve decided to do something with it…
What is AirOFit?
It is a device, which allows you to train your breathing muscles and your lungs capacity. You can choose (HERE) a few options: together with advice, PRO version with an app for your phone and the simplest one – only trainer.
The device blocks the flow of air (during breath in/out), and there is a 6 levels for both. In an app you’ve got a 3 levels for trainings (depends if you are new, regular or master:).
I’ve decided to take a PRO version, it comes with 2 mouthpieces, charging cable and etui for transportation. It is really easy to pair with a smartfon (just download an app and it’s really intuitive). When everything is done – we can start our trainings and then… magic appears.
AirOFit review: an APP
It’s our “command center”, there we can check our capabilities, we choose on which part currently we would like to focus (breath in/out, lungs capacity etc.). An APP show us (with tutorials) each exercise, and show our performance (% how we copy the exercise). The APP is nice and intuitive.
First usage of AirOFit
How we evolve during our trainings is really important. Systematic tests are important as well, so at the fist use of AirOFit, you will have to take a lung test. On the left side you’ll see how was mine.
- Volume – above an average
- Insporatory – as well above an average
- expiratory – definitely below an average
AirOFit – first training
At first I’ve took the “introduction” training, which shows all possibilities of different kind of trainings and each exercise which we can make with the device. We can choose between:
- anaerobic treshold
- respiratory strenght
- vital lung capacity
- relax
Each cycle consist of different exercises, which improves particular part of our breath. We can of course choose instead of a whole cycle we can choose a particular exercise (or both). If I do not have enough time, I just take one exercise from that “cycle” (5 minutes). During the day if I can… I make another exercise, but the one which I choose.
AirOFit – kinds of exercises:
- which helps to improve your breathing muscles, during breath in and out,
- our feel of comfort without breathing (with lungs full or empty). The exercise with holding my breath with lungs empty is the worst for me… the panic attacks. So I guess that I should often do it,
- Vital lungs capacity – the same as with an engine in your car:) the bigger the better :D,
- Hyperventilation – very fast breath in and out. The same as you run as fast as possible, you can adjust to it.
AirOFit review – the RESULTS
The most important thing – results and if it is worth buying? For me there is a few elements which are important in my results (the points on which I need to practice): my fast breath in/out, lungs capacity and gaining a control over my body and reduce panic in moments when there is lack of oxygen. I exercise almost everyday (between 5-10 minutes), and below you’ll find what I have accomplished thanks to AirOFit:
- vital lungs capacity: 6,5l (1,1 liter more than at the beginning) which is 20% better
- Breath in: 138 cm h20, increase in 27%
- above all, breath out: 132 cm h2O, the most significant change – increase by 57%
Numbers are numbers… but what those gives me?
I feel more comfortable when I hold my breath. I can be longer underwater (before freestyle swimming with head below water on 5… was impossible for me. Now I can do even 7 moves without taking a breath. I do feel more comfortable and self aware in water. Sometime when I don’t manage to take a breath (due to wave or something), I do not panic as before. My breath in/out is much faster which it takes less time above the water.
If AirOFit is only for swimmers?
In other activities I feel the difference as well:
- firstly: riding a bike or running – I can breath deeply, interval training is more effective cos’ I feel better during such sessions. There are moments, in which I feel the lack of air (the same as I mentioned at the beginning of that review), but the border is definitely in another place than before,
- secondly: strength training – again I can feel improvement. Especially the I do push ups or pull ups, during exercise I can perform better with my breath hold, and I can make faster exchange of oxygen
Summary of AirOFit review
Maybe let’s start with disadvantages 🙂 I can see only one – the price (but taking to the consideration another devices connected with triathlon… it is not as high price anymore:D).
Advantages:
- in my case I cen see real results of using it, so I can say… it works,
- the device is rather small and you can take it whenever you want,
- great app which leads you through training
I can imagine, that it is possible to make similar/alternative exercise without it. For instance breathing through a straw or snorkel, blow balloons or holding your breath. Yes you can do it… but if there is a better way? why not to try it? I think that AirOFit is a very good device which can help us to reach our new potential,
